Skills SA requirements: mental health training for RTOs in 2026-27 

South Australian RTOs will need to prepare for Skills SA’s updated Student Support Standards, including mandatory professional development requirements to be completed by 1 June 2027. 

While the updated requirements also cover trauma-informed practice, neurodivergence and inclusive teaching, Mental Health First Aid remains a key area of focus. RTOs must ensure at least one staff member maintains currency in accredited Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), or a Skills SA-approved equivalent. 

What RTOs need to know 

The 2026-27 requirements are designed to strengthen staff capability and support safer, more inclusive learning environments for students. In practice, RTOs will need to review current staff capability and identify any gaps across mental health, trauma-informed practice and inclusive education. 

• At least one staff member must maintain currency in accredited MHFA, or a Skills SA-approved equivalent. 
• At least one staff member must complete professional development in trauma-informed practice.
• Additional professional development may be required in neurodivergence, Universal Design for Learning or inclusive teaching practices. 

Why Mental Health First Aid matters 

Training and support teams are often among the first to notice when a student, apprentice, trainee or client may need help. Mental Health First Aid training gives staff practical skills to recognise signs of mental health concerns, respond safely and appropriately, and create a more supportive learning or workplace environment.

With the 1 June 2027 deadline established, RTOs should consider Mental Health First Aid training as part of their professional development planning and broader student support strategy.
